Recently, we proofread and edited a Chinese-English lease agreement translation.
One of the Chinese clauses was “使用期限为一年，届满后可协商续租“, which was translated directly into “The term of use is one year, and renewal can be negotiated upon expiration.“
The direct English translation was a bit ambiguous as it didn’t convey clearly whether the renewal was automatic or it required mutual agreement. It could lead to disagreement or legal disputes upon expiration of the initial one year. The landlord may think it requires mutual agreement to renew the contract, while the tenant might believe it’s automatic renewal.

Another case in point is lease agreement translation that doesn’t comply with local laws.
